SAMBA FOR SINGLES
a documentary series by Claudia Richarz and Carl-Ludwig Rettinger
a LICHTBLICK FILM production
co-produced by WDR and arte
running time: 10 x 26’
Setting out to find the partner of a lifetime – the one and only “Mr. or Ms. Right” – is a fairly unrealistic expectation, but many people dream of just that nonetheless. This contradictory state of human affairs is the lifeblood of countless film and television features and series, but nary a documentary. In real life, though, finding and cultivating true love isn’t so easy, and it also takes plenty of time. Thankfully we were able to spend a whole year shooting our protagonists, without the trust and openness of whom this series would not have been possible.
Home base for our investigation is Frau Lentz’s singles’ dance class in the Ruhr Valley town of Essen. Our singles meet here each week to practice ballroom dancing – samba, salsa, tango & co. Most of them already have a marriage or in a long-term relationship behind them. After subsequent years alone, of one-night-stands or short-term liaisons, they long for a new life partner, and the hope is that dancing will put a positive spin on their search.
