Autopilots tells the story of four people trying to live up to their long lost ideals in four interwoven episodes. Over the years each of them has become a social outcast. Lacking a foothold, they erratically move through their own lives. During one day and one night these characters’ paths cross on the freeways of the Ruhr Area.

Georg, trainer of a German Soccer League team, must win the cup game tonight if he wants to keep his job. He is in danger of being fired and discovers how the mechanisms of the soccer trade have begun to turn against him. Dieter, freelance reporter is on the pursuit of spectacular images daily and nightly. He loves his son, who lives with his ex-wife Rita, but does not devote much attention to him. A day together and a horrible experience bring the two closer together. Jörg a bigoted salesman for bathtub lifts finds himself drifting off into isolation and discovers he cannot go on with his double life. He is not only afraid of losing his job, his whole life is in a rut and today everything seems to have conspired against him. Heinz an aging pop singer spends his days singing at anniversary celebrations for shopping malls and the like. For his fans he is still the star of the old days, but he himself finds it increasingly difficult to keep up the illusion.
They are all heroes of an inner insecurity, who are just trying to hang in there…
