Marseille, summertime. For many long month, the Aldebaran has been relegated ti the very end of the port`s seawall. Out where it is not the way of port activity. Foreign sailors without papers, without money, separated from their families, forgotten by the world, stagnate on board in a promiscuous destituation.
At the top, Abdul Aziz, their captain. A Lebanese man who is highly respected. Tough to himself and tough with the others. Under him, Diamantis, the Greek, his second. Sailor by choice and by tradition. Diamantis is open to reflection, undecided, almost pensive. Aziz is closed, impermeable and will never diverge from his principles. They have known each other a long time and share a mutual esteem. However there is nothing such a friendship between the two men, their only link being the sea, a lost, moribund world.
Then comes the day when the crew is made redundant. Each of them, in exchange for leaving the boat, receives a small amount of cash. Only Aziz and Diamamntis stay on Board. Why do they choose to rot aboard the Aldebaran? Face to face, now almost unmasked, they observe each other. Has Diamantis stayed simply out of empathy for his captain, like he suggests? Could Aziz have returned home, to Dakar? What is the Greek looking for in his incessant trips into Marseille? Whilst these two solitary men evaluate each other, Nedim, the young Turk of the crew makes a surprising return to the ship. He missed the ride on the truck that was to take him back to his village, to his fiancée. Got himself in trouble, he has.
Nedim is but an insolent blank page, still to be written, and who believes in the simple joys of life. Which is all too much for Aziz! It`s too late for him…his life is tinged with spite and destined as tragic. Diamantis finds his first love, Amina in Marseille. A love he lost twenty years before. However it is another woman, Mariette who alters his trajectory. Loving her seems so easy that it`s quite disturbing…To love once more. Make peace with one`s self. So what of the land?
The most beautiful journeys, are not they those we undertake without moving, as we watch from the quay, a ship sailing away?
